A cool new update for Yahoo! Messenger leads the pack of today’s Fresh iPhone Apps. Also making the list: an app that lets you filter movies by rating to determine what to watch, and a news app for the politically minded.
Yahoo! Messenger update (iPhone), Free
Something cool for iPhone 4 owners: Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo!’s free instant messaging app, has added video chat support to its repertoire of functions.
The app already allowed for instant messaging from the iPhone as well as free SMS text messaging. Now, users can link up to their Yahoo! accounts to track their friends online and initiate video chats with other users of the mobile app, as well as users who are chatting from their computer. You also can also make low-cost calls to landlines, similar to the way Skype works.
The PoliJAM Times (iPhone), Free
Yes, The PoliJAM Times is another free news app like many others you’ve seen in the App Store, but it has one really cool function: the ability to mark and save articles for later. News apps often lack this feature, which is unfortunate, because it really does make reading articles much more convenient.
PoliJAM Times is a news app from the folks behind the poliJAM.com web site. Whether you’re a junkie for politics, democracy or just news, there’s a wealth of articles and information here, sorted by category and searchable. The app is full of content and carries all the functions you’d expect from an app of a major newspaper or magazine.
WhichFlicks (iPhone), Free
Ever looked at a list of movies to watch and wondered which are worth your time? WhichFlicks hopes to provide you with the answer. It works with Netflix, which means subscribers to that service and its Netflix Instant service will get the most use out of the app.
WhichFlicks filters movies using a lot of different factors, including ratings on Netflix and Rotten Tomatoes, MPAA rating and release date. It’ll even filter movies based on whether you can access them instantly with Netflix. Find a movie you want and you can add it to your Netflix queue from the app. Even if you’re not a Netflix user, though, the app includes a lot of other cool features to help you make a decision – including the ability to watch trailers on your iPhone.
