Today’s Fresh Apps are really useful in specific instances, but if you find yourself at one of those times – attending the Daily Show and Colbert Report’s Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear in Washington D.C., or attempting to rid your brain of an annoying song – you may find these apps invaluable.
SpyVid (iPhone) $1.99
I recently saw the star of one of my favorite TV shows at my local Best Buy near Hollywood. I pulled my iPhone out to capture the moment, but there was no way to shoot a video without being totally obvious and thoroughly rude. Sighing, I repocketed my phone and cursed the fact I had no way to immortalize my moment of geekdom.
The point of that long-winded story was that I wish I’d had SpyVid at the time, which allows you to hold your phone up and discreetly shoot video. In order to hide the fact that you’re actually using your phone to record someone without their knowledge, SpyVid provides you with an “alibi activity” to keep your thumbs busy in the meantime.
Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear (iPhone) Free
The official app of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report dueling D.C. rallies is designed for something of a niche market – namely, people attending the rallies. But the app is cool-looking, well-made, and filled with information that fans of the Comedy Central shows will need when they head to see Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert in person.
The app will direct people to the rallies and let them check in using Foursquare or link to Facebook and Twitter. It also has a few cool features you could use even if you’re not going to be at the rally – namely a photo stream and social networking features to link you up with other fans.
Unhearit (iPhone) Free
This one has been out in the store for a bit, but it’s too cool not to mention – and it’s new to me, so maybe it’ll be new to you.
Using “the latest in reverse-auditory-melodic-unstickifcation technology,” Unhearit helps get songs that are stuck in your head, well, unstuck. It’s a hilarious idea and even though the app is a novelty, it’s not bad at its job.
Actually, Unhearit just plays a song for you at random. The idea is that playing another catchy song might unseat the song that’s currently playing on a loop in your brain. You might be stuck with the new song, but then again, maybe not. And the variety of songs found in Unhearit makes it worth it just to see what the app will offer in the way of auditory annoyances.
