Fresh iPhone Apps for Nov. 3: MegaMind, Flashlight Free, My Writing Nook

Got kids who are excited about the upcoming Will Ferrel movie MegaMind? You’ll want to check out our first Fresh App today, which helps teach kids to read and tells the story of the movie. We’ve also got a cool flashlight app, and something for aspiring novelists.

MegaMind – Storybook App (iPhone, iPad) $2.99

MegaMind isn’t out until Friday, but this app brings the story of the film and some cool moving and still images to the iPhone and iPad in a read-along storybook format.

The app is equipped with several options meant to help teach kids about reading including a “read to me” mode, a “read alone” mode, and a third option that just lets the storybook run automatically. Kids should get a kick out of the high-quality artwork that occasionally includes motion elements, and the story is well-read and maintains the movie’s humorous tone.

Flashlight Free (iPhone) Free

For iPhone 4 users, the best part about this app, other than coming in handy whenever you’re struggling to put a key in a keyhole if you arrive home at night, is that it’s free.

There are lots of flashlight apps on the iPhone, but Flashlight Free makes use of the iPhone 4’s built-in LED light, which means it’s brighter and should use a little less battery than screen-based flashlight apps.

My Writing Nook (iPhone, iPad) $2.99

This app has been available for about a month now, but we’re bringing it to your attention in honor of National Novel Writing Month. You can use My Writing Nook to get down a few hundred words whenever you’ve got a spare moment but no access to your computer during the 30-day mad dash to 50,000 words.

In addition to adding a little bit to your burgeoning novel, you can also track how much you’ve written as you’re killing a few minutes, as the app acts as a word counter. Now you don’t have to waste even a few minutes during this intense month of novel production.
