Fresh iPhone Apps for Mar. 2: Dr. Seuss Camera, Instacast, Mogwee

Celebrate the birth of Dr. Seuss with today’s leading Fresh iPhone app, a camera app you can get for free that lets you create customized, Seuss-themed birthday e-cards. We’ve also got all the details on Instacast, a podcast streaming and management app that makes full use of iOS devices’ multitasking capabilities, and Mogwee, a social networking and chat app.

Dr. Seuss Camera – Happy Birthday Edition (iPhone) Free

All the Dr. Seuss apps in the App Store are on sale in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and that includes the new version of Dr. Seuss Camera, which lets kids make any of 11 Seuss-themed birthday e-cards to share with friends and family.

Cards can be customized with lots of different stickers and classic Dr. Seuss captions, and they integrate your iPhone’s camera (as you might expect) to let you add photos to the e-cards. You can enlarge photos and add custom borders, and when your cards are complete, you can share them via email or save them to your camera roll.

Instacast (iPhone, iPad) $1.99

Podcast subscribers, Instacast is for you. The app allows you to manage video and audio podcast subscriptions from within the app, without syncing your iOS device to your computer. It’s also optimized as a playback program for podcasts, and using multitasking, allows you to stream podcasts wirelessly in the background.

Instacast currently streams podcasts over Wi-Fi or 3G Internet connections, but a bandwidth-free option is forthcoming in a future update. Meantime, you can use Instacast to filter your episodes by what you’ve cached or starred to save for later, and the app will play podcasts in the background while you do other things with your device. You can also share links from the app using Facebook, Twitter and email.

Mogwee (iPhone, iPad) Free

Mogwee is kind of like having a social networking chat room on your iPhone — think of it as a small-scale Facebook feed or Twitter timeline — in which you invite friends to “hangouts” and then post updates, chat and share things like photos and videos. You can connect a photo and a nickname to your profile, create chatroom-like hangouts and invite friends to participate in them, and take part in multiple conversations or feeds by entering multiple hangouts at once.

One of the cooler aspects of Mogwee is the ability to play games (at least one — Sheep Tennis, it’s called) straight out of your hangout. You’ll need to invite friends to really make Mogwee get interesting, but it’s free, so convincing a few people to join your hangout chatroom shouldn’t be too difficult.
