It’s iPad 2 Day, and fresh from the iPad 2 announcement event last week, we’ve got the details on the freshly updated iMovie and GarageBand — two power-house apps optimized for those of you standing in line to come home with a shiny next-generation iPad. While you’re waiting, you should also check out My Daily Clip, an app that supplies you with a fresh movie clip each day that you can share. Read about all three below.
iMovie (iPhone, iPad) $4.99
With the launch of the iPad 2, iMovie jumps platforms from being iPhone 4- and iPod Touch-exclusive to adding another device to its stable. You can now take full advantage of iMovie’s visual film editing suite, complete with a big screen and touch controls, to allow you to cut movies together on your iPad quickly and easily.
Along with becoming a universal app optimized for the new iPad, iMovie packs additional themes and the ability to add waveform music on movies edited on the iPad. As before, you can add still photos, titles, music and other elements to your films, and using iOS 4.3 and AirPlay, you can watch your movies on your Apple TV using your local Wi-Fi network.
GarageBand (iPad) $4.99
Apple used GarageBand pretty effectively to make the iPad 2 look amazing, but the real power is in the app. Like its Mac counterpart, GarageBand is a great app for recording and controlling music. It can handle up to eight tracks of traditional recording and you can actually plug your phsyical instruments into your iPad and record from them, then visually edit and adjust the song with touch controls.
GarageBand’s best features are its virtual instruments, however. They actually turn your iPad 2 into one of several musical instruments, including a drum kit, a guitar and a keyboard. There are lots of variations and you can record the music you play on these virtual instruments to be added to your song. And musical knowledge isn’t a factor, because you can play simplified versions of the instruments or let the iPad play them for you.
My Daily Clip (iPhone, iPad) Free
Enjoy a clip from a movie, streamed daily to your iPhone or iPad with My Daily Clip, an app that is designed to remind you of great movies and make you consider buying them, but which also provides two minutes of free enjoyment each day. The clips stream quick and easy to your phone, and each new week has a theme, so you’ll get all break-up movies one week, all war movies the next, and so on.
Clips from earlier in the month remain visible, but while you can see what movies are coming on the docket for the days ahead, you can’t see the clip until its given day. When it does show up, however, you can share it with friends using Facebook to spread a laugh, an emotion or nostalgia. My Daily Clip will even remind you when a movie’s daily clip is available, in case it’s one you’re looking forward to, and you can jump straight to iTunes from the app to purchase or rent the film.
