Fresh from a day off, we’ve got four new apps to start your shortened week. Up first is Fotopedia North Korea, a photographic journey through the country that includes 1,300 images. Sit down and enjoy it after making use of the updated Starbucks app, which makes paying for coffee without digging through your wallet a snap. And when you need a break from work while daydreaming of barbeques past, there’s Battle Slugs, a puzzle game in which you’ll pit one army of slugs against another, and Lamebo vs. Zombies, a simple shooter that will have you tapping away and upgrading a ton of weapons.
Fotopedia North Korea (iPhone, iPad) Free
Like Fotopedia’s other joint ventures with National Geographic, Fotopedia North Korea is a photographic journey through the secretive Asian country that captures its atmosphere, people and locations in crisp, intense photos. The app actually contains more than 1,300 such photos to tell the story of North Korea, which were captured by photographer Eric Lafforgue.
In addition to Fotopedia’s many photographs from the country, as well as interactive maps and social media integration so you can share your favorite images with your friends. Fotopedia also includes wallpapers and slide shows, and you can save photos you particularly enjoy as favorites so they’re easy to find later.
Starbucks update (iPhone, iPad) Free
If you’re looking for an app that makes things convenient, Starbucks has you covered. Already users of the app could link it to a Starbucks gift card and then use the app to pay for transactions at many Starbucks stores. Now you can reload those gift cards from within the app using a credit or debit card, making it easy to pay for coffee on-the-go and earn rewards points without digging through your wallet.
Starbucks also has a bunch of other handy features, like the ability to search for nearby Starbucks stores and to custom-build drinks within the app. You can also track the amount of money left on your Starbucks cards and the number of reward points you’ve earned to date.
Battle Slugs (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Puzzler Battle Slugs is a little bit like the board game Othello. You control one of two slug armies set on a hexagonal game board, and take turns trying to defeat the other army. With each turn, you can either choose to move your slug across the board, or clone him into an adjacent square. If you take over a square that’s adjacent to an enemy slug, you’ll turn him to your side. The goal is to take over as much of the board as possible and when the whole board is taken, to have the majority of slugs left on it.
As you progress through the game, you’ll earn experience points based on how well you do. Those points can be used to open additional game boards that all have different sizes and shapes, and therefore demand different strategies. You can track your high scores against those of other players using leaderboards care of Game Center.
Lamebo vs. Zombies (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
You’ve probably blasted a fair number of zombies by this point if you’re an avid iPhone gamer, but there are always more undead monsters that need to be aired out, and that’s where the Rambo-esque sheep Lamebo comes in (apparently). Lamebo uses touch controls to fire off various weapons, so you’ll just tap away at zombies to help your character target them. You’ll need to tap quickly and to pick up lots of extra money that zombies drop during each level in order to upgrade your weapons and survive more.
Earning money in each level allows you to purchase more weapons to take on ever-tougher zombies – you’ll fight through 36 levels, gather seven different weapons and upgrade them a total of 21 times before the end. There’s also some goofy voice-over work at play here, and an unlockable endless mode to add even more zombie-blasting content.
