Snag a new way to take notes and a new way to tell time with today’s Fresh iPhone Apps list. Molenotes is our headliner, which gives you note-taking on your iPhone but with an analog, notebook-in-hand feel. Following that is PipClock, an app that’ll make iPhone-owning fans of the video game series Fallout pretty happy because it’s modeled after technology from the post-apocalyptic role-playing game. In games, the fun climb-as-high-as-you-can indie title The Blocks Cometh just receive a big update and a price cut, while Matchlings reworks the familiar match-three genre.
Molenotes (iPhone) $0.99
Note-taking app Molenotes is meant to make taking virtual notes on your iPhone feel like writing them in a more traditional, permanent notebook. It divides your notes by category with tabs as if you were writing them down on paper, and lets you choose from handwriting, typewriter style or academic type-set for your information.
As you use them, you’ll keep your virtual Molenotes notebooks on its virtual wooden shelf, so you can choose which one to “take out” and write in when you have an idea, which helps to keep things even more organized. The app also features Dropbox support, so you can save your ideas to the cloud and access them later.
PipClock (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Inspired by the Fallout video game series, which is set in a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland, PipClock is meant to emulate a tool from the game called the PipBoy that provides wastelanders with all the information they need to survive. PipClock brings weather and time information to app users, along with cool peripheral things like a (fake) Geiger counter and (fake) fallout readings every day.
PipClock also includes other cool Fallout-themed information. It uses your iPhone’s GPS to zero-in on your location and give you game-themed tips about it, and also provides Wasteland news, a compass, information about nearby landmarks and all kinds of other stuff.
The Blocks Cometh By Halfbot update (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
A big content update to Halfbot’s iOS port of its well-received Flash game, The Blocks Cometh, has just come down the pipe to the App Store – and with it come new ways to play. The core gameplay remains the same: Huge blocks fall from the top of the screen toward the bottom, and players have to dodge them while climbing ever higher. The higher you get, the better your score, which is tracked on Blocks’ Game Center leaderboards.
In the new update is a set of four new characters and a new display mode that are available through in-app purchase. You can now play the game in landscape mode, which a lot of players were asking for, and Halfbot has added more to the soundtrack and more achievements to earn along the way. They’ve also cut the price in half, so if you haven’t picked up The Blocks Cometh yet, you definitely should now.
Matchlings (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
There are tons of match-three style games in the App Store, taking advantage of the insane popularity of games such as PopCap’s Bejeweled. With so many games that offer pretty much the same experience, it comes down to the game’s personality, and Matchlings has quite a bit of personality to go around. Instead of moving jewels around a grid-based game screen, you move little characters called matchlings that disappear for points when you make a horizontal or vertical line of three of the same.
Matchlings includes four game modes, including an endless mode, a speed mode and a level-based mode, and has a few extra things that make it stand out from the horde of similar games in the App Store. As you make combinations and score points, you’ll earn stars that allow you to activate some of the Matchlings’ special abilities – like converting some characters into others or clearing out all of one kind.
