Fresh iPhone Apps for Dec. 1: Infinity Blade II, Black Ops Zombies, Judge Dredd, Catball Eats It All

With just a month remaining in 2011, one of the year’s most anticipated titles has hit the App Store. It’s Infinity Blade II, the sequel to the highly popular and award-winning Infinity Blade, and it’s a game you should definitely play. Taking a page from the console world is Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies, an iOS version of the undead-fighting mode from one of video gaming’s most popular franchises. Judge Dredd vs. Zombies also puts an undead spin on a popular franchise, pitting the comic book character against hordes of enemies in a “single-stick shooter.” Finally, Catball Eats It All has players rolling a round cat across strange worlds, eating everything in sight.

Infinity Blade II (iPhone, iPad) $6.99

The follow up to what could be considered the iTunes App Store’s biggest title is finally here – and it takes everything that made Infinity Blade great and does it better. Developer ChAIR Entertainment set the bar for graphics on iOS devices using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3, and with Infinity Blade II and the power of the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2, it does it again. This game is gorgeous.

But Infinity Blade II isn’t just a pretty face; it’s a big game with about four times the areas to explore as its predecessor, tons of new enemies to battle with the game’s signature swipe-based sword-dueling, a much deeper story and tons of items to purchase and earn. If you dug Infinity Blade and its brand of fast-paced one-on-one fantasy action, you should most definitely pick up Infinity Blade II.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies (iPhone, iPad) $6.99

Stepping right out of the console and PC universe is Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies, an iOS take on the popular undead-blasting mode in the first-person shooter. Call of Duty zombie-mode games have made their way onto the App Store before, and Black Ops Zombies packs all the high production values and zombie-fighting intensity of its predecessors.

You can take on zombies in Black Ops’ single map alone or online with as many as three cooperative teammates, which is the same as what’s offered in the console experience (though with more locations). And if first-person zombie killing isn’t enough for you, Black Ops Zombies also packs 50 levels of its Dead Ops Arcade mode, a top-down twin-stick shooter that’s a whole different kind of experience.

Judge Dredd vs. Zombies (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

A goofy spin on a comic book hero that Sylvester Stallone once portrayed, Judge Dredd vs. Zombies is described as a “single-stick shooter.” It’s a top-down shooting game in which the goal is to move quickly through levels, blasting away at all manner of zombies with signature Dredd weapons like the Lawgiver pistol. The game does the aiming mostly on its own, leaving you to dedicate your efforts to keeping your trigger finger going and keeping Dredd out of harm’s way.

Judge Dredd packs 30 levels of zombie mayhem to fight through, plus the ability to upgrade all of Dredd’s equipment and weapons to make him an even more powerful force for justice. There’s also Game Center support, providing achievements and leaderboards so you can see how you stack up against players all over the world.

Catball Eats It All (iPhone, iPad) Free

Taking the prize for “kinda weird” this week is Catball Eats It All, a game that takes a page from the popular but just as strange Katamari series. You control Catball, a cute, endlessly rolling eating machine. In each of the game’s “worlds,” you need to roll along the surface of roundish places, gobbling up all the food you can as quickly as you can to earn points.

Eating small food sitting on the surface of the worlds earns Catball points, but finding larger food items triggers multipliers, so you’ll need to balance searching out the best food with getting everything eaten as quickly as possible. And when you’re done eating all the food on a world, you have to eat the world itself. Catball also features easy-to-use touch controls and a goofy, cute art style.
