Those iPad owners who have been waiting for a version of The Onion to call their own need wait no longer — today’s freshest Fresh App is The Onion Tablet, an iPad version of the satirical news outlet. It’s available for free, so you won’t have to track it on Piggie, another free app on our list that helps you keep an eye on all the money you spend in a given amount of time. And finally, there’s 3D Photo, an image manipulation app that uses shapes and depth to turn your photos into something more.
The Onion Tablet (iPad) Free
“America’s Finest News Source” is now available on your iPad. Download The Onion Tablet and you get access to the satire news network’s full complement of articles, videos, infographics and images totally free. The app basically turns your iPad into an issue of The Onion newspaper, but complete with the kind of interactive, touchable elements you’d expect.
In addition to allowing you to tap into articles and read them full-screen from its newspaper-like front page, The Onion Tablet is packed with videos that will play straight out of the app. You can even watch Onion News Network programs from within the app over a Wi-Fi or 3G Internet connection.
3D Photo (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
There are plenty of photo manipulation apps available in the App Store, but 3D Photo takes a slightly more original approach to turning your old photos into something new: it actually manipulates the shape of the image to (occasionally) give it the illusion of 3D. The app cuts up the image, folds it or otherwise changes it in order to make a textured pile of bits of images to give the illusion of depth. The effect is a little Picasso-esque, arranging pieces of the image so they don’t quite match up.
You get 15 different 3D templates when you download the app (which is half-off for a limited time), which you can apply to photos either in your device’s Camera Roll or that you take on the spot. The app will wrap the image around shapes ranging from simple, like circles and squares, to more complex geometric shapes, and when you’re done, you’re free to save the results and share them with others.
Piggie (iPhone, iPad) Free
Keep track of your personal spending and see where your money goes with Piggie. The app lets you input whatever you spend, whenever you spend it, using either its quick category support — allowing you to document what you spend on meals and transportation, for example — or by filling in the details of each transaction on your own. As you add transactions, the app keeps track of what you’re spending in total by month, week, or whatever you specify.
Piggie’s simple take on keeping track of your finances is highlighted by the number of features that come along with it. It supports cloud saving to a Dropbox account, allowing you to backup and restore data if you lose it or import data from other places. You can also change the shortcuts the app makes available for you on the fly without having to fill in additional information, so if there’s something you buy frequently, you can quickly save it to your spending chart without filling in your information every time.
