Egotistical and self-promoting aren’t things you normally want tied to your name, though when it comes to getting an iPhone app devoted to you, they almost seems like they are prerequisites. Look no further than the The main screen includes a news ticker and eight icons, including “Floyd TV,” “News,” “Favorites Tips” and “Fight Night,” among others. The video section is a collection of Mayweather-related YouTube clips, including his Mosley post-fight interview, and the news section is mostly sports stories, though not specifically about the boxer.
The “Favorites” section includes both music and apps, along with links to download them. “Fight Night” is probably my favorite thing about this app, as it lists all of Mayweather’s fights and includes information such as date, location and decision. If anything, this section should be expanded.
The Tips feature is a blatant rip-off of the Ochocinco app, with “tips” such as: “Floyd Mayweather has many characters, Money Mayweather is just one”, and “I hold the record for quickest to world champ.” Thanks for the tips, Floyd.
Other sections include a Twitter section, photos and information about the Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation.
While Ochocinco can come off as annoying, I also think he has an undeniable appeal to him. Similarly, while Mayweather may not be as likable as other athletes, he’s very much an attraction.
But while the Chad Ochocinco Experience was refreshing, comical and informative, Floyd Mayweather – Official App is actually a little bland. Maybe it’s because Chad did it first; but whatever the reason, this iPhone app leaves me thinking there should be more here.
Still, fans of Mayweather shouldn’t hesitate to pick the app up. It’s free, looks nice and navigating the app is both fast and simple.
And if you aren’t a fan of his? Well, unfortunately I don’t think this app will change your mind.
