The old Apple advertising chestnut “There’s an app for that!” has almost been drowned to death in self-parody at this point in the iPhone’s life span. But it does seem to hold true: if you can think of some vague idea, there’s probably an app for it. But that’s not always such a great thing. Sometimes we don’t need an app for that. Here are five apps released in July we’d probably do just fine without.
Britney Spears Photo Booth! ($0.99)
I’m not even sure at the height of her popularity that I would have wanted to put Britney Spears in any of my photos. But now? After the numerous meltdowns and lack of a really great single in years? I’m good without, thanks. That’s what makes this photo booth app so oddly timed. As many fans as she may still have today, this could’ve reached a much wider audience several years ago.

Miethke (Free)
Hydrocephalus, a disease wherein fluid doesn’t drain from the skull at a regular rate like it should, is serious business. But I have it myself, so I feel pretty certain in saying there’s no way an app that explains how the artificial valves used to treat the condition would make for a compelling app. Sure, they might be nice to read about once or twice, but to carry this app around in your pocket right next to your zombie how-to editor seems unlikely.
Where did you go!! (Free)
Do you suffer from terrible short-term memory loss and also own an iPhone? Here is an app for you. Where did you go!! Is basically the visible version of the location-tracking data that everyone was freaking out about a few months ago. When the app is running it will track data points of the places you are travelling with your iPhone, so that later when you’re trying to remember where you went for lunch, you’ll have a handy record of it. If you are having so much trouble remembering where you’ve been, an app for that seems like the least of your worries.
AllWordsWithA (Free)
I admit there is probably some value to this app. If you were playing some sort of word game where you needed to know words that begin with A, this app would be a savior. But it just seems so strangely specific. Why “A” words? Was there a clamoring for a handy dictionary that only covered the first letter of the alphabet?
Storm Coming ($0.99)
Not to sound like Old Man River, but there was a time not so long ago when you knew there was a storm coming because you could look up at the storm clouds and see them approaching. You did not need an app to tell you anything about it. And despite Storm Coming’s unique “lightning/thunder” approach to storm prediction, you still don’t need an app for this. If you’re outside and getting wet, it’s probably raining. Trust me.
