October’s a time for ghouls and ghosts and candy and really inappropriate Halloween costumes – time and history have proven that much. But there’s other things happening in October that aren’t Halloween related at all. Take a look at these rather odd, unnecessary October apps for a glimpse at what I’m talking about.
Hipster (Free)
I understand why people would want to use a photo app that lets you take photos and make postcards out of them. It’s a good idea and works tremendously as a way to catalogue your memories in a way that’s more unique than a Facebook photo album. But why would you call the app Hipster? This is like creating a drinking app and then naming it a slang term for an Irish person. Unless you’re the type to get their kicks from belittling others, this app strikes the wrong chord.
Shave Me! (Free)
I hate to shave. It takes up valuable sleeping time and I usually nick myself every so often which isn’t fun in the least. An app designed around shaving then, is sort of my nightmare. Yes, I suppose it’s great that you can use a waxing kit or a razor to shave the virtual hair in this app. And I honestly admire the strangeness of an app that you shake to help hair instantly re-grow. But really, who wants to spend any time shaving their iPhone?
The Amazing Type-Writer ($1.99)
Stylistically, an app that lets you write out notes as if you were typing on a typewriter is actually a cool concept. But The Amazing Type-Writer probably takes things a step too far. For instance even watching the demo makes it clear that backspacing on an authentic type writer is a huge pain in the butt. That the app faithfully recreates how irritating this is is admirable in a way, but also seems incredibly frustrating. Who would put up with that for more than 2 minutes, especially given how twitchy it already is to type on the iPhone keyboard?
CRA – Cigar Rights of America (Free)
Did you know cigars smokers have rights? They do! This app helps you read up on the latest in cigar legislation. You can also view photos and videos related to the cause. That’s all well and good, but given the health risks associated with smoking, I’m not sure the rights of people to smoke cigars are exactly the most important thing to focus on at this time.
Fake Text Free (Free)
Okay, Fake Text Message isn’t from October so I’m breaking my own rules a bit, but I had never heard of it until now so I am throwing it on this list. There are two reasons to use this app and neither of them are very good. Either you’re so self-important that you think people will be impressed that you’re getting a lot of text messages, or you think getting obviously fake text messages from celebrities is somehow interesting or funny. Neither of these things are true, I promise you.
