Not to jump the gun too much, but with the end of August fast approaching, summer will be over before you know it. As a Midwesterner who loathes winter, this is particularly depressing to me. But there’s no reason to waste the last bits of great weather sitting on your couch. Try these iPhone apps out so you can get the most out of the rest of your summer.
BeachSpot (Free)
There’s nothing overrated about beaches in the summer time. After all, it’s hard to top pretty people and lounging as a one-two punch. BeachSpot is a handy app that lets you find beaches easily using a geo-alert feature that will buzz you whenever you’re approaching a nearby beach. And the addition of in-app purchases for tide charts should delight more nautically-inclined folks.
Dog Park Finder Plus ($1.99)
For people who like the beach but want to involve their pet in the summer fun, Dog Park Finder Plus might be more your speed. There are over 5,300 dog-friendly parks, beaches and hiking trails listed in the app, and directions are provided to make your user experience even easier. As someone who is terribly directionally challenged, I appreciate the hand-checked location markers even more.
TripAdvisor Hotels Flights Restaurants (Free)
It won’t be long before the kids are back in school and you’ll have to spend your days making lunches and double-checking homework you forgot how to do long ago. So get out while you still can! Not for good, obviously, but plan a vacation for the last gasps of summer using the TripAdvisor app. With plenty of user reviews of the hotels and restaurants in the area, you’ll only have yourself to blame if you wind up with a dud of a trip.
Fishing Spots (Free)
Promising “thousands” of fishing spots, if you’re looking to cast a few lines before the sun sets on another fishing season, Fishing Spots may be your best bet. This app is loaded to the gills with decent extras, too, including a feature that lets you share pictures and the location of your catch. There’s nothing like showing off in the digital age.
My Golf Caddy – Course Finder ($1.99)
I am a terrible golfer. Like Tiger Woods post-scandal bad. Times ten. But that doesn’t stop me from swinging the clubs from time to time. My Golf Caddy makes it that much easier to find a place to show off my lack of skills. With a listing of over 16,000 courses, you’re bound to unearth a new one in your area. This smart app also provides maps and driving directions to all the courses so you’ll have no excuse for missing your tee time.
