What a selection of games we’ve lined up for this week! Leading the way is a 20-year-old role-playing game classic, Final Fantasy V. As surprising as it is to see “Five” on the iPhone, it’s a game well worth your time once you get over its surprisingly high price. The rest of our games of the week vary from action adventure to 2-D platformer, but all warrant a closer look, so read on!
Final Fantasy V ($15.99)
In some ways, RPGs make the best iOS games. While they’re not exactly “pick up and play” friendly, their relaxed environment makes ideal use of the touch screen D-pad that so many iPhone games favor. Now the iPhone is getting what some consider to be the very best RPG in Final Fantasy V, thanks to the hard-working folks at Square Enix. The epic saga that finds players in pursuit of elemental crystals that protect the Earth has been faithfully recreated on iOS. The visuals have gotten a slight upgrade, but Final Fantasy V is still very much an old school gamer’s game. The price tag is steep but worth it to play one of gaming’s best efforts.

Knight Storm (Free)
Knight Storm by 505 Games is an action adventure game for everyone. With multiple gameplay types, players who don’t favor one style of gameplay can hold out for the game’s next round for something completely different. From 3-D jousts to long quests featuring real-time combat and even one-on-one duels, Knight Storm covers a lot. Players can even upgrade their characters with better weapons and armor as they progress through their adventure.
Little Inferno HD ($4.99)
For something a little different than the usual app fare, gamers should check out Little Inferno HD from Experimental Gameplay Group. This fiery indie game lets players burn logs, robots, credit cards and more in order to solve its challenging puzzles. Little Inferno has been heralded by numerous sources as an out of this world unique experience, but it’s also one of the better looking puzzle games you’re likely to see. Beware, however, as this game takes a lot of juice to run. It’s only compatible with iPad2, iPhone 4S, and iPod Touch 5 and later versions.
Tiny Troopers 2: Special Ops ($0.99)
Feel like taking control of the battlefield? Try Chillingo’s Tiny Troopers 2: Special Ops. The troopers may be tiny but the gameplay packs an enormous punch. Tiny Troopers 2 is a real-time strategy game where players set up their troops and fight off hordes of invading enemies by firing weapons and putting up defenses. Think of it like Starcraft but with a special ops brigade on Earth. Troops’ armor, weapons and uniform can be customized and upgraded, too. Tiny Troopers 2 is no slouch visually, either. The excellent shading of the levels really brings this cartoon war to life.
Ms. Splosion Man ($2.99)
Forget the odd title, Ms. Splosion Man is a 2-D platform game worth playing. Featuring 50 levels and four boss battles, Ms. Splosion Man offers up plenty of gameplay for players to test out the game’s six power-ups and 1,500 in-game challenges. Ms. Splosion Man is a gorgeous and quirky platformer that borrows liberally from classics like Mario and Sonic while forging out a style that is unique. If you’re in the mood for a colorful, fun game full of classic gameplay, Ms. Splosion Man is worth your time and money.
