Feature-rich Formspring might have users ignoring web version

Question-and-answer network Formspring has been kicking around the web since 2009, offering users the ability to ask and answer questions about any topic. Now the service has gone truly mobile with the official app Formspring for iPhone and iPod Touch.

The Formspring app is better geared toward existing users, but new users will be able to create an account as well as search their social networks to find friends using the service. Formspring offers one official Question of the Day, but other questions are only sent to a user’s followers. Following is private — so a user won’t know you follow unless you answer a question — but I discovered that finding new people to follow is a bit difficult in the app. The app does offer an option to send questions to contacts from your address book who might not be on the service yet, so this could lead to a boost in users for Formspring as well as help you populate your friends list.

What I do like about the Formspring app is that its developers went a step beyond simply creating an app version of the website. In the Formspring app, users can now post photos when asking a question. Replies can contain photos, too. There is no photo support through the web interface, so this alone is a solid reason to pick up the Formspring app. The Q&A service is also capitalizing on iDevice’s push option, as the app will send notifications of new questions, responses or smiles coming in.

Formspring is a nice time-killer, and with increased personal use, you’ll be able to cultivate a network of contacts who will answer your query in seconds. Plus, the exclusive app features make this a must-grab for fans.
