Extra! Extra! Weird News is really ordinary and boring

As a news junkie with a love for the obscure, I downloaded Weird News with great expectations. The app, however, is a big disappointment on all fronts.

The Weird News design and features are as boring as the content. Open the app and you will see a bird’s-eye view of what appears to be a wooden table and cup of coffee. Above the cup appear headlines focusing on what the app’s developers deem “weird” news. To borrow a phrase from Hunter S. Thompson, this app really isn’t weird enough for me.

Using arrows, you can scroll through various headlines. If one catches your fancy, there is a link titled “link” (clever, no?) that will jump you to the full story.

The first story listed is headlined “People Really Walk in Circles, Study Says” followed by “Black, White Churches Merge to Save Money,” followed by “Where Can I Meet Some Singles?” After a few minutes of this, I am falling asleep on top of my iPhone.

If you are patient, you might find a story or two that will give you a chuckle. For example, a story about two Hawaiian cops being arrested for drug possession while on a trip to Las Vegas is sufficiently ironic to make the weird news list. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the app.
