Designed for travelers with a penchant for favorites—and for forgetting—Everplaces offers up a slick interface for keeping track of all of the places you want to remember, whether its for dining, shopping, sleeping or any other category you can think of. The app for iPhone and iPod Touch takes some of the best features available on the Everplaces website, but doesn’t quite feel complete.
Although Everplaces is a nicely designed app, it has omitted some features. For one, there’s no option for seeing recommendations by other users—something that is available on the Everplaces website. If it is available in the app, it’s buried so deeply I couldn’t find it, and that’s not great either. This is a big miss for users seeking recommendations away from home, and shouldn’t be excluded from the app version of this service.
There’s also no true search function in Everplaces. The app will prompt you with nearby places when you go by entering the location name, but this only covers limited vicinity. You can opt to drag a pin around the map to change your search radius, but this isn’t convenient, easy to do or ideal for entering places in other cities. Otherwise, you’ll need to enter in all place details manually, and I don’t see that happening.
I like that your saved places will automatically filter by city, category and tag, which, if used properly, will make it easy to find your entries in the future. That is, after all, the point. I don’t love, though, that states are omitted—the app displays Chicago, United States, instead of Illinois. That’s a small gripe, but a pretty important one when many smaller towns and cities have same-name counterparts in other states.
Everplaces is just the latest in a string of apps offering to give your memory a break. Because an account, or Facebook Connect, is required to use the service, I’d wait for Everplaces next update before giving a go.
