Google Reader is a great tool for personalizing news sources to fit your needs. I find it particularly handy for sources like The Onion, where reading the headlines is half the fun.
Now you can enhance your Google Reader experience with the Readlines iPhone app ($0.99). It syncs with your Google Reader account, cycles through unread stories, and creates a streaming feed of headlines for you to choose from.
When you spot a headline you feel compelled to know more about, tap on it, and the full story opens up in Safari.
Readlines lets you tailor app settings to best suit you. You can set the headlines to scroll automatically, or you can swipe through them manually. You can also decide if you want to mark items as read. Don’t like the white font on the black background? Change it to black font on a white background. And you can even change the font type itself.
The app is designed to automatically re-sync on a regular basis to ensure the news is fresh. You can also choose to manually refresh the content.
So place your iPhone on its dock on your desk, and get to work. When it is time for a mental break, you can pick from the headlines that interests you. This app definitely serves to save time that would be otherwise wasted sifting through dense websites — such as nytimes.com — full of thousands of stories. And you can be certain you won’t miss any breaking news.
