Halloween is this weekend, so we’ve found a few apps to help get into the spirit of things. Check out our price cuts on a game that pits you as a sniper rifle against a horde of Halloween monsters, and another that lets you virtually carve a pumpkin.
Halloween Sniper (iPhone) $0.99 (was $1.99)
It may not be much more than a theme update for the holiday this weekend, but then again, Halloween Sniper does give you the chance to use a sniper rifle on zombies, ghosts and other monsters. And that’s kind of cool.
The game is a first-person shooter, meaning you’re looking down the barrel of the gun, and the gameplay seems fairly simple and intuitive. Best of all, this is a game that’ll help you get past the candy and costumes and remember the true meaning of Halloween: preparing for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.
Pumpkin 3D Magic (iPhone, iPad) $0.99 (was $1.99)
You might need a newer iPhone model to try this app, but it sounds like owners of a 3GS or later will be able to carve a virtual pumpkin using this app. Pumpkin 3D Magic uses the internal orientation sensors built into the iPhone to register how you’re moving the phone and displays different parts of the pumpkin on the screen accordingly. Basically, it’s as if you were moving around an actual pumpkin that was physically in front of you, and using the iPhone camera to look at it.
The 3D modeling part of the app sounds like it’d be enough to warrant checking it out. You can get all the way around the pumpkin by changing the orientation of the iPhone, giving you the opportunity to be creative with all parts, including the top and bottom. Might be a good way to practice before you do your actual pumpkin carving for Halloween night.
iScience (iPhone, iPad)
Students will find some use in iScience, which provides a bunch of math reference material for various scientific disciplines and math subjects. You’ll find formulas for things such as fluid dynamics and functions and curves, making it a great cheat sheet for doing homework, and a good way to study and memorize certain formulas. The app will even export your formulas as a PDF so that you can print them out.
