Three free games await you in the iTunes App Store on today’s Download Discounts list. You’ll definitely want to check out the fairly funny, casual, high-scoring title, Berzerk Ball. In it, you play a home run derby using an annoying geek (think The Simpsons’ Comic Book Guy), sending him bouncing and flying for as far as you can manage. We also have a Japanese-style role-playing game that goes by the name of Terra, and a puzzler that involves shooting evil robots in Puzzle Bot Blast.
Berzerk Ball (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $0.99)
Berzerk Ball is a high-scoring game with a bit of a goofy premise. As one of seven characters, you are charged with playing in a home run derby sort of event in which you try to hit something as far and as high as you can to rack up a high score. Only the thing you’re hitting isn’t a ball — it’s a geek; that is, a pretentious and annoying, pony tail-sporting fat nerd. Wailing him with the bat is extremely satisfying after he spouts some malicious comments, and although the geek bounces painfully along the ground (and sprays some liberal amounts of blood as he does so), he always walks away unscratched.
The better your hits in Berzerk Ball, the more experience points you get to increase your power level and mid-air control over the geek. Your swings are executed by tapping the screen as two gauges move, trying to time the aiming gauge to catch a balance between distance and height and the power gauge to get the strongest swing possible. Berzerk Ball also includes Game Center support to track your abilities against other players on its leaderboards.
Terra (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $0.99)
A 16-bit old-school role-playing game, Terra will have players nostalgic for the Japanese-style RPG. The game looks a whole lot like old Final Fantasy titles, with colorful Super Nintendo-like graphics and action gameplay in which you get to choose two characters from three different classes — a sword-wielding warrior, a gun-toting ranged character and a double-bladed assassin.
Terra includes 17 dungeons to play through and more than 300 weapons and armors to collect in order to customize your character and take on any threats. You’ll also build your characters’ skills and abilities through the course of the game to become stronger to face down the more than 50 enemies and bosses scattered throughout the game.
Puzzle Bot Blast (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $0.99)
In this Tetris-style puzzler, you control either a boy or a girl character who carries a laser pistol. Descending from the top of the screen on a grid are groups of robots of varying colors — your job is to eliminate the robots by shooting them. But there are two many to take out one at a time, so your best bet is to shoot at colored bombs that can set off a chain reaction and take out multiple robots at once.
The trick in Puzzle Bot Blast is using the game’s second feature, a magnet ability, to rearrange the descending blocks in order to get the outcome you want and clear out more enemies. The game is free for about a week, and receives its leaderboards and achievements through Apple’s Game Center service.
