Squash some zombie skulls for free today with Zombie Sweeper, which leads our Download Discounts list and requires skillful timing and quick reflexes. Controls are simple in Zombie Sweeper: As zombies approach your character on each side-scrolling level, you either tap on the left side of the screen, or the right. Each tap causes your character — who looks suspiciously like Bruce Campbell in Evil Dead — to smack a zombie, but timing is important. Swing too early and your character’s blow strikes the ground, disorienting him for a moment. Swing too late and you’re a bloody, dismembered, cartoony mess.
Zombie Sweeper features a number of role-playing elements to go with the zombie smacking. Earning experience, gems and “souls” allow you to upgrade your weapons or buy new ones that each have different characteristics. The game supports OpenFeint so you can get your social gaming on along with your cartoon zombie decapitations.
Ancient War (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $0.99)
Castle defense with cavemen is a good way to describe Ancient War, a 2D side-scroller in which you pit your forces against an opponent’s in hopes of pushing the opposing force all the way back to his or her side of the screen. You’ll take on eight enemy tribes as you attempt to dominate the ancient world, and use eight different types of units to do it.
Apart from the single-player campaign, Ancient War supports online multiplayer battles. Your units will level up as you play, giving you an edge in single-player combat when you’re not taking on another human. You’ll even get a chance to bring dinosaurs into the mix, regardless of their historical accuracy or usefulness in an actual war.
Typogr.am (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $0.99)
Turn your photos into posters, complete with a typographical message on them, with Typogr.am. Not only that, but it packs 11 different effects that can be applied to your photo to change how it looks — which Typogr.am does at random, applying affects to your photos to see how they look. That’s coupled with text that falls over the image that you control.
Once you’ve got your message and your effects dialed in, it’s time to share your creation. Typogr.am works with Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr to help you bring your photo to your friends and share your simple creation.
