Pirate Go (iPhone) Free (was $0.99)
This puzzler requires you to build a path for a pirate ghost character to get from one end of each level to the other. The path across the level is broken or otherwise messed up, and it’s up to you to place objects along the path in order to help the pirate cross the gaps, dodge obstacles, and avoid death — again.
Pirate Go has 64 different puzzle levels to work through, plus Game Center support for achievements along the way. There also a lot of social networking support, using Twitter and Facebook, so you can share your progress with others on the fly inside the app.
Mortal Skies – Modern War Air Combat Shooter (iPhone) Free (was $0.99)
Take to the skies in this vertical shooter in which you have to dodge enemy fighter plane fire and blast tons of enemies on your way to victory. Your plane does the firing on its own — your job is to do the piloting, using either tilt or touch controls to pound through the bad guys and bring down a boss at the end of each of seven levels.
You can adjust your difficulty setting to one of 100 small variations using a slider, and Mortal Skies features Game Center support for lots of different achievements. This is a classic-style arcade veritcal shooter with a World War II feel, and fans of the genre will find a pretty decent challenge here.
Smart Vocab SAT (iPhone) Free (was $4.99)
You can snag this SAT study companion for free for about a week, and anybody who’s working on prepping for the test would be wise to take advantage. Smart Vocab starts out by quizzing you to get a feel for what you know and where you need help, then helps to train you on more than 2,000 words, ranked by difficulty.
The app has a couple of cool modes, including a quiz mode to help you learn through repetition and check to see how well you’re doing in your studies. And when you need to know more, the study mode includes parts of speech, definitions and example sentences, to help you learn in the best way possible.
