We nabbed three games for you to check out in today’s Download Discounts list, and all of them will hold your attention for a least a little while — and totally for free. Three different genres are represented: a two-stick shooters, a falling-brick puzzler and a turret shooter. We’ve got something for everybody, all for nothing: read all about them below.
ZOZO Bugs (iPhone) Free (was $1.99)
You’ll see similaries in ZOZO Bugs between high-quality falling-block puzzle games like Tetris and Lumines. From the top of the screen, pairs of symbols — different kinds of butterflies and flowers — fall toward the bottom. Your job is to tap and drag the objects to rotate them and position them to make groups of four of the same kind. Putting them together in groups eliminates them, adding to your score and allowing other symbols to fall into their places.
ZOZO Bugs is nicely simple: its no-nonsense design and controls make the play fun and easy going, but the speed of the falling symbols picks up over time to add some challenge. ZOZO Bugs also includes a pretty great, engaging soundtrack for a puzzle game. It’s free and a fun way to kill some time, especially with headphones.
Forest Frenzy (iPhone) Free ($0.99)
You’re a forest-loving youth who must defend his woodland hangout from a parade of lumberjacks, robots and other tree-clearing machinations who wish to cut it down and take it over. Your weapon: acorns, a high-powered slingshot, and your quick aim.
Forest Frenzy is basically a turret defense game. Your slingshot is mounted at the bottom of the screen, with enemies marching toward you from the far end. Using touch controls, you’ll aim the slingshot, pull back on ammo load, and let it go to fire it and knock out enemies. Some enemies will drop power-ups, like watermelon seeds, which let you wallop more enemies at once, with the goal of getting through as many waves of enemies as possible.
Crimsonworld (iPhone) Free (was $0.99)
Space marines have it rough. There always seem to be monsters or aliens or alien monsters that need to be destroyed, and for some reason, you’re always the last space marine left who can stop the alien onslaught. Welcome to Crimsonwold, a top-down two-stick shooter that has you covering the world in alien monster blood with a variety of weapons.
Crimsonwold isn’t extremely deep — you’ll mostly be just defending yourself in a small area from lots of different kinds of monsters — but it does offer several different weapons that are unlocked as you play, plus additional power-ups that you can grab to make your guns even stronger. What’s better, though, are the game’s unlockable perks, which you earn by scoring points. Every so often you’ll unlock a new perk, which let you move faster, reload faster, dodge enemy attacks or even switch to a new, random weapon. For free, Crimsonworld is a fun distraction, and its perk system adds a little strategy to fairly simple genre.
