Electronic Arts is running a big sale on games for the next 24 hours or so, and we’ve featured a couple of our favorite titles in today’s Download Discounts. You can get the details on both of those games below, plus a freebie, but you don’t have to stop there: just type “Electronic Arts” into your iTunes search bar to pull up the publisher’s full catalog of games, and look for the cool ones marked down to $0.99. Sorry — the phenomenal Dead Space is still $6.99.
Scrabble (iPhone) $0.99 (was $2.99)
Everybody knows Scrabble, but you’ve never seen it quite as cool as on your iPhone. Using the device’s Wi-Fi capabilities, you can actually play with live opponents over the Internet. And not just three opponents in a single game; in fact, Scrabble can support up to 50 games at a time. That’s a lot of tiles to sort through — remember, no proper nouns.
You can play in Pass n’ Play mode with people in the same room as you, or against friends from Facebook who also have the app — you can even chat with them. And if you’d rather not have a social game, take on the game’s computer opponent and see how your skills measure up against the machine. Basically, with the Scrabble app, you’ve got a game in your pocket at all times.
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (iPhone) $0.99 (was $2.99)
The 1990’s arcade and console classic is at its lowest price ever this week, and if Mortal Kombat 3 was a big part of your childhood (like it was mine), you’ll get a Fatality of nostalgia out of EA’s port and update of the game. It includes all 13 original fighter characters, plus the 10 arenas from the original.
There’s a little bit of handy customization to be had in the app, which uses virtual buttons laid over the touchscreen. You can map your the on-screen buttons according to your preference to help you elevate your game and find what you’re most comfortable with. Ultimate Mortal Kombat includes the original arcade mode, in which you fight through the other characters tournament-style, but you can also engage other real-life fighters over the Internet using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth in the game’s online multiplayer mode. There’s also a time attack mode, where you really will be attacking as you fight through timed battle’s with the game’s final boss, Shao Kahn.
MovieCat! (iPhone) Free (was $0.99)
Don’t let the title confuse you: MovieCat! is a movie trivia game. It involves cats, but only as a means of delivering tons of movie trivia questions for you to answer. You’ll find all kinds of questions of varying difficulty levels, divided into 14 categories. They’re not cat-themed, but rather, cats replace actors in images and clips for visual clues.
There really is a lot of great trivia in the app that’ll keep movie fans busy for a while. But if it’s not enough, you can purchase more puzzles (and Cat Scenes!) as in-app purchases. You can also post your scores to the MovieCat! leaderboards to see just how smart you are compared to other movie fans, and challenge your friends to try to beat yours using Facebook.
