Games like Bounce-it aren’t just plagued by technical issues – they’re already decomposing because of them. Nothing about this iPhone game works the way it should.
Bounce-it is a vertical scroller in which you control a weird little orange guy who bounces up into the air. To keep him moving upward, you have to keep him bouncing off a piece of string that moves randomly around the screen. You aim where he’ll land by tilting the iPhone back and forth.
It’s a simple, dated concept, and one that’s easy to do well. But Bounce-it is home to some intense technical issues, like a frame-rate that seems to take a few tries to get moving. And the game consistently crashes right after you die and try to restart. Often, the slow frame-rate makes you miss your very first bounce, killing you, and the app crashes immediately afterward.
Other than that, it feels like Bounce-it was intentionally programmed to be boring. It’s a really sparse game – to the point where it’s strange how little appears on the screen. The art style has an interesting claymation, “Wallace and Gromit” feel to it, but you really don’t get to see any – mostly it’s just the orange guy, the brown background and the darker brown piece of string.
There’s just too much wrong to justify spending even a dollar on this game, not to mention that if it did work correctly, it’d still be pretty uninteresting. There are better vertical scrollers out there. Bounce over this one.
