Dogfight your way through SteamBirds HD

SteamBirds HD is a turn-based strategy game that brings dogfights to the iPad. The goal is to shoot down enemy planes, one maneuver at a time. Unique gameplay and an amazing soundtrack are what make this game a pleasure to play.

It is important to note that the gameplay is not live-action. You must set each flight maneuver, then push the “play” button to execute your plan. For example, if you want to turn to the left, you need to move an arrow to set a path to the left. Then, you can push a button, and the plane will travel a preset distance while turning left. Your plane will pause again, awaiting the next maneuver. The main reason for this type of control is because you are never just controlling one plane, but rather multiples planes spread across a large area. So, you’ll need to plan a strategy for each plane at the same time. Once the “play” button is pushed, all planes will move together.

The goal is to shoot down all the enemy planes on the map. When you’re close enough to another plane, your gunner will automatically shoot. However, so will the enemy. So, you really need to plan ahead before you approach each plane. If all your planes get shot down, you’ll need to restart that level in order to advance. You earn stars for each level, depending on how much damage you take after completing the mission. Taking no damage will earn you four stars.

There are several power-ups and special maneuvers that help you along the way. You can do a quick 180 to get right behind the enemy after an initial attack. You can also release poison gas to cripple your enemy’s plane. In the later levels, you also get more weapons to use.

SteamBirds HD is definitely one of the more unique games I’ve played. This take on the turn-based strategy game is both intriguing and addicting. The only feature I see lacking is multiplayer support. I’d love to be able to play this game with a friend via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. It has so much potential as a multiplayer game. Hopefully this feature will be added in the future. For now, it’s still a breath of fresh air in the App Store.
