Documenting everyday goes mobile with Daily MugShot

You might not know the name Noah Kalina, but if you’ve seen the viral video “Everyday” you’ll know his face. Kalina, who has taken a mugshot-style photo of himself everyday for more than nine years, was the inspiration for Dailymugshot.com, a social networking site that makes chronicling daily photos as easy as possible. Now there’s an iPhone app to help the process.

The Daily MugShot app is not a standalone product—it is made for users of the main Web site. If you’ve already got an account at DMS, you simply enter your login information. Snap your picture using the iPhone’s camera and then you’ll use Apple’s pinching and pulling technique to align the image in a pre-existing box. Tap send and the photo automatically uploads (though a tad slowly) to your account and into your “mugshow,” a quick video of all of your photos to date.

Easy enough, but that’s where the features of the Daily MugShot app end. There is no way to modify settings through the app, such as making your mugshow private. One of the nice features on the Web site is the ability to set landmarks on your image. This allows you to center say, your eyes, in the same place in every photo, which makes your video (not supported on iPhone) look that much cooler. The app for iPhone doesn’t include this ability, and although you can move photos into position on the Web site at a later time, it’d be nice if the mobile version streamlined this.

Because DMS only allows one upload every 24 hours—and there’s no retroactive posting if you miss a day—this app is ideal for anyone seriously committed to the project who is away from a computer.
