In Detonation, your job is to defend the planets from wave after wave of enemy attacks. The weapons of choice are a variety of bombs, each with a unique quality. The only weapon you have to defend against the onslaught is your finger. With a gorgeous UI and simple controls, it’s definitely a winning arcade title.
It’s rare that you find an arcade title with a storyline, but this game has one, and it’s actually not bad. Basically, you are given the task of defending developing planets from alien attacks. The aliens are using something called the “detonation wave” in an attempt to penetrate each planet’s core and destroy it. The weapons are a variety of different bombs, each with some sort of unique power. The first bombs you encounter are slow and have the weakest explosion. As you progress, the bombs become more powerful and travel toward the planet’s core at a much faster speed. All you have to do is tap on each bomb before it reaches the core. I found it easier to use just one finger rather than my thumbs to play the game. But, that’s it for the controls.
Bombs you miss, end up in the core, and weaken your planet. When your planet is destroyed, the game is over. However, there are also some power-ups that help replenish health and make bombs less effective.
I found the tapping controls to be very responsive and accurate. The graphics are optimized for the retina display, and really look amazing. Also, the music and explosion sound effects are top-notch. For a buck, this game is absolutely worth checking out.
