While there are plenty of radio station iPhone apps available, none of them put as much music right into the hands of their users as the Daytrotter iPhone app (free) does. Although to be fair, Daytrotter is not so much a radio station as it is a huge, archived live music project.
For the unacquainted, Daytrotter is the name of a studio in Illinois where, since the middle of 2006, a band a day has come and recorded roughly four songs. The songs are then taken right from the tape they’re recorded on and placed on the Daytrotter Web site. This music iPhone app acts as a mobile version of the site, allowing you the same unlimited playback of the Daytrotter sessions that you can experience on the Web.
Finding a session to listen to is incredibly easy. You can browse sessions by artist, or simply search for any artist you think might be in the long archive list. If that doesn’t suit you, you can also browse songs by most played or recently added. Finally, if you want to throw caution to the wind, just use the Daytrotter radio player and enjoy a steady stream of various songs recorded during Daytrotter sessions. It’s a great way to find out about bands you’d never know existed otherwise.
The rest of the iPhone app is equally superb. Sound quality is top-notch for an iPhone app that streams as many songs as Daytrotter does, and the bios that are included with each session are quite thorough.
Be forewarned, this is an iPhone app aimed at the indie music consumer. There aren’t many, if any, Top 40 bands to be found among the Daytrotter sessions. If indie music appeals to you at all, however, stop reading and grab this great music iPhone app immediately.
