Previously released on PC and Xbox LIVE, Cthulhu Saves the World marries a hilarious script with 8-bit graphics and turn-based role-playing. Cthulhu Saves the World (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
Old-school gamers will get a big kick out of the humorous Cthulhu Saves the World. Players take on the role of the unspeakable horror Cthulhu, who wants to destroy the world – but can’t. He’s been cursed, and until the spell is broken, Cthulhu can’t access his cosmic powers. And in order to break the spell, he has to become a hero. Cthulhu Saves the World is a fun role-playing experience akin to the 8-bit generation of turn-based games, but it really shines in its humorous story and dialog.
The Amazing Spider-Man (iPhone, iPad) $6.99
Gameloft’s tie-in title with the upcoming movie of the same name brings a fully 3-D Spider-Man game to iOS. In The Amazing Spider-Man, players take on the role of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and have almost a full run of New York, with the ability to swing from rooftops, track down side-quests, beat down bad guys and move through the story of the film. Just the ability to swing around the city is pretty great, but most remarkable is the fact that Spider-Man feels like a console release, with production values to match. The graphics are great and the gameplay is pretty fun, with a whole open world to explore.
Yesterday (iPhone, iPad) $4.99
A point-and-click adventure title that started life on the PC, Yesterday brings players in on a dark, thrilling mystery. There’s a serial killer on the loose, and players are tasked with working through the game’s story to discover who it is. Like other adventure titles, the gameplay consists of using elements found in each new environment to progress and solve puzzles. But it’s Yesterday’s adult tone, themes and content that really make it interesting, and its dark story is a fun one to work through.
Velocirapture (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Adult Swim’s latest title is about the dinosaur apocalypse, putting players in the role of a Jurassic deity charged with rescuing the good dinosaurs and smiting the evil ones. The premise of the game is pretty simple: green and red dinosaurs cross the screen and you need to flick the green ones up toward Heaven, while drawing lines down to send lightning bolts through the red ones. Things get harder as more and more dinosaurs appear and red dinosaurs fight to get into Heaven at the expense of the green ones. It gets hectic, but Velocirapture is an easy way to kill a few minutes and packs some challenge in its simplicity.
Squids Wild West (iPhone, iPad) $2.99
The second chapter in what’s becoming a series of role-playing titles, Squids Wild West brings back the turn-based strategy action on offer the first time around, with more quality story and RPG features. This time around, Squids brings a cowboy theme and an Old West atmosphere, but is also packs lots of RPG elements and more than 12 characters players can recruit to take into battle. There’s lots to do and plenty of RPG elements to keep players busy.
