Let’s take a break from iPhone 5 and next-generation Apple TV rumors for a second and talk about a miniature version of the iPad that might be in the works.
According to a source obtained by iMore, Apple is currently planning an October 2012 launch of a 7-inch iPad. Even better, the new device would be charged at less than $250.
This would allow Apple to essentially flood the zone with multiple versions of its iconic tablet computer – similarly with how it is doing it with the iPod – and make it even more difficult for Android or other OS-powered devices to gain traction. Apple is already smelling blood in the water with reported waning sales for the Kindle Fire. A new price and form factor for the iPad could be a checkmate in the tablet space once and for all.
A few other things reported by iMore.
– It’s not certain that the new iPad would be exactly 7 inches, but is a close enough estimate.
– It would have all of the features of the most recent iPad, including a 2048×1536 resolution display.
– A smaller price tag possibly means less storage capacity, likely 8GB.
With all iDevice rumors, we take this with an ocean of salt. Still, a 7-inch iPad makes sound market sense to us. We also can’t wait to get our hands on one!
