Corporate communication iPhone app Yammer adds new features

Yammer has released an update to its app for iPhone or iPod Touch.

Used by more than 90,000 businesses worldwide, Yammer, which turned two earlier this month, is a company-specific social network. A cross between Facebook and Twitter, Yammer aims to increase collaboration and connection among employees — and with a roster full of Fortune 500 companies and tech powerhouses such as Groupon, Mashable and Razorfish, it seems that Yammer is growing in popularity. Yammer uses company email addresses to create a network that allows for easy sharing of ideas through push notifications on iDevices, ideal for replacing internal email and IM, since all Yammer content is searchable.

With Yammer’s most recent update, users will now be able to attach multiple photos, from either a live camera or from the camera roll, to a single message. Hashtags and user names are now searchable, and Yammer integrates the popular pull-to-refresh method. Yammer has also returned the ability to view attachments — such as PDFs, docs or Excel files — within the app itself.

Many users have complained about Yammer’s instability, reporting frequent crashes, but this issue doesn’t seem to be universal. The Yammer app is free, as is use of Yammer’s basic network. Other fuller-featured plans are available to businesses on a pay-per-user basis.
