For photographers, ColorSplash is a specialized app that’s like having a little Photoshop in your pocket. The app allows you to de-saturate a photo (turn to gray scale) and then add touches of the original color back to create a dramatic display, all from your iPhone or iPod Touch. Your friends will marvel at this bit of magic.
You can pinch the screen to zoom in or out depending on the level of detail you’re trying to achieve. For more drama, ColorSplash provides four brush choices: hard edge, soft edge, opaque or transparent. One ColorSplash feature I really like is having multiple sessions open; you can go back to a session at any time to continue working and then save your finished image when you’re done.
It’s easy to fix mistakes; just touch the color button or the gray button, depending on which you need to correct. Most of the time, a finger is too big to get fine details, though. It would be great if this app had the option to use a sized “brush” wherein you could choose the pixel width in order to get cleaner edges when working on a detailed image. But for on-the-go use, as long as you aren’t nitpicky about fine details, ColorSplash produces stunning results.
ColorSplash also has a share feature to upload your colorized photos directly to Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. Bonus: there’s also in-app help feature if you can’t figure something out on your own.
Simply put, this app is worth $1.99 if you want to create one-of-a-kind images.
