Life is hard! Maybe not if you compare it to how tough things were even 50 years ago, or how tough they might be in more under-developed countries, but still hard just the same. Sometimes the stress of it all threatens to throw you off your game completely. That simply will not do. So the next time you feel yourself getting a little worn out, especially as the days draw shorter, try one of these five apps aimed at keeping your mind in balance.

Relax Sad Instrument (Free)

Getting a good night’s rest can be key to enjoying the day ahead. Relax Sad Instrument might sound like the name of a buzzed-about indie rock album, but it actually aims to help you sleep better at night by playing soothing live sounds. It comes with a 24-hour timer and claims that because the app uses real sounds, it never loops back around. If you’re having trouble sleeping, Relax Sad Instrument might be worth a shot.

Aroma – The Aromatherapy App (Free)

When I first saw Aroma, I was skeptical. After all, there’s no way they can make your iPhone smell like different things… can they? They can’t. But the app gives you the lists of oils needed to perform various kinds of aromatherapy. It also provides instructions on how to mix the oils. The only thing it’s missing is a masseuse to come administrator the therapy to your world-weary body.

Emo Weather Free (Free)

Do you ever feel the weather is just like, expressing your feelings, man? Emo Weather Free might not actually cheer you up if you’re in a bad mood, but it should get you to chuckle once or twice. The app uses colorful cartoons to show you the weather forecast in a way only an angst-filled teenager could really appreciate. Rain as cold as your heart, sun as searing as the unrequited devotion you feel towards another… it’s all here.

Mood Barometer (Free)

Being selfish isn’t as hard as it sounds, especially when you’re walking around and know everyone around you feels exactly as happy or sad as you do. Using Mood Barometer, you can find out if your emotional intuition is correct. The app catalogues your mood and then lets you compare it to other groups who have entered their mood data. Is the United States as happy as you are today? Now you can finally find out.

Simply Being – Guided Meditation for Relaxation and Presence ($0.99)

If you enjoy the idea of meditation but want someone to guide you through the process, in case you can somehow mess up learning how to relax, Simply Being is an app that might be of some assistance. It guides you with voice, music and nature sounds (the latter two are optional) through meditations up to 20 minutes in length. It might not be as good as having a real live instructor next to you, but it’s certainly the next best thing.
