Fans of CBS’ popular news magazine Sunday Morning can now catch the program any day of the week, thanks to app Sunday Morning for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Noted as much for its nature video as for its variety of content, Sunday Morning has been a mainstay of weekend programming for more than 30 years, and its app takes the experience digital.
One of the most interesting things I found about the Sunday Morning app was the fact that it is really two apps in one. After tapping the “CBS News” icon on the toolbar, the screen flips to display content found in the CBS News app. Tap on “Sunday,” and you’ll return to Sunday Morning content. The different sides of the app also work together: You won’t find a search function on the Sunday side, however, the search function on the CBS News side will pull content from Sunday Morning, so you won’t miss out on anything.
I found the videos to be a crapshoot in terms of length — some were short clips, others were full segments, and you can’t see clip details until after you’ve pushed “Play.” That said, the video quality was adequate over 3G speed, and I didn’t experience any technical problems during playback. Viewing a video isn’t always an ideal option, so I appreciated that Sunday Morning also included a section devoted to text versions of its video content so users can simply read the stories and interviews.
Sunday Morning devotes a section to its famous nature content, viewable in landscape or portrait modes, as well as a variety of image galleries. I did run into a few snags in this section, primarily errors that no images existed and the inability to view the photos in landscape mode. But, even with its small problems, Sunday Morning is worth a download for the addition of CBS News alone — this app will truly give users comprehensive news coverage from CBS.
