Some people will climb a mountain because it’s there. Other people will design an iPhone app because they can. Fifth Floor Media’s iOwn app is such a case: It exists because it can.
The iOwn app is an inventory system for the average homeowner, though I can’t fathom why the average homeowner would use it, even for insurance purposes.
With iOwn, you can list every item you own, categorizing them within the app by room and adding the item’s purchase price, serial number, model number and where it was bought. You can also add a photo of the item to record that you actually own it.
You can back up this information on iOwn’s site if you register. For added protection, you can set a passcode to view your inventory on your phone. That’s a good feature; if your iPhone was lost or stolen, anyone who opens iOwn would know what you own and where to find it in your house.
But for $4.99, this app is a tough sell. Though having an inventory of your possessions is advised, and having it outside your home is smart in case of fire, why not just use the iPhone’s Note app for such a list?
If you’re obsessive, iOwn is perfect. But if you just use common sense, you can save yourself the $4.99.
