There’s something inherently terrifying about macro photography of insects. The photos are so detailed and close up it gives a false perspective that the bug could be as big as you.
This isn’t meant as a criticism of Bugs! Incredible Macro Photography By Thomas Shahan, just an admission that I might not be man enough to handle an app full of spider pictures without wanting to jump out of my skin a few times.
That said, Bugs! has some incredibly cool photography. The app is split into two sections, “Spiders” and “Arthropods,” with the latter section filled with photos of flies, mantises and bees, among other insects. As great as these pictures look, though, the layout could be a bit more forgiving. There is a soundtrack of sorts, that you can add music from your own library to, but getting it to work takes some trial and error. It’s not that it doesn’t work, but the buttons work so hard to stay out of the way of the photos that they are a bit too tiny for their own good. There are also buttons in the app that allow you to throw a picture on Facebook or view a thumbnailed slideshow of the photos, but they don’t seem to work consistently. At times, tapping them once is enough to get them to pop up, and at times, I’m left tapping numerous times before they appear.
These minor quibbles are just that, though, and anyone who has an interest in photography or bugs probably would get a kick out of the content in Bugs! Incredible Macro Photography By Thomas Shahan. I only hope there are additional picture packs to download eventually. After all, I can only be creeped out by the same spiders for so long.
