Bowie is a Space Oddity, but not an iPhone app phenomenon

I’m a huge fan of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” so if this app were just the song alone, it would almost be enough for me. The dreaminess of the line, “Here am I floatin’ ’round my tin can far above the world” gets me every time. That being said, I think this app is just kind of “eh.”

After 40 years, David Bowie released his original tracks and recording experience of the legendary song, “Space Oddity,” and now we get to play with the mixes ourselves through Remix David Bowie – Space Oddity. Bring down the mellotron, pull up the orchestra — I’ll admit, it was pretty fun to mute the lead vocals and emphasize the vocal doubles, and play out various combinations like this, but I could only stay entertained for so long.

Part of the appeal of this app is that you can record the mixes you make, which is cool, undeniably. There are a few different versions of the song you can start out from: a cappella, music track sans lyrics, acoustic, and the original, and then you adjust each instrument from there. While playing the a cappella setting with nothing else but drum and bass satisfies a certain curiosity, I really would have been won over if I could have recorded my own instruments or vocals alongside Bowie. Or, better yet, if I could have adjusted the instruments differently at various points in the mix, another feature this app failed to master. Overall, I would say this app is a bit overrated and might be the kind to save for hardcore Bowie fans only.
