One of my favorite free apps is Bloomberg by media giant Bloomberg L.P. This Finance app is rock solid, and that’s saying something, because the iPhone’s Stocks app is pretty special on its own.
Bloomberg is just bigger. It’s more comprehensive and much more adaptable. With Bloomberg, you can follow domestic and international markets for Equity Indices, Commodities, Bonds, Currencies, and Equity Index Futures. Frankly, it makes Stocks look rather wimpy by comparison.
Bloomberg’s My Stocks function lets you follow your stocks while toggling through different views such as Value, Value Change, Position, Bought At, Profit & Loss, and Last. Tapping Edit lets you customize each item by marking your position and original purchase price.
Bloomberg also leverages its position as one of the most trusted names in financial reporting by stocking its app with plenty of articles about, ummm…stocks. Well, that and other things.
The News function features articles chosen by Bloomberg News editors in more than 30 categories ranging from Currencies to Emerging Markets to U.S. Sports. Tap Edit to tailor the kind of news you want to see. You can fill your News page with everything, or just items of interest to you.
I use a number of news apps, and Bloomberg is among the best. The articles are accompanied by ads, but they’re small and discrete, and I don’t mind their presence. And if you see something especially interesting, you have the option of e-mailing the article to contacts in your Address Book. Not bad for a free app.
