Bloom, an app by ambient music pioneer Brian Eno, is part music machine, part visual hypnotizer. Bloom lets you become your own ambient composer, and you don’t need to have any music skills to create your own dreamy soundscapes.
The app uses the touch-screen capabilities of the iPhone and iPod Touch better than any other apps I’ve used.
Getting started is quick and easy. After you download, you can listen to music created by Bloom or start playing your own.
By touching the softly colored screen, you can introduce notes, which then loop into a pattern of music and expanding colored dots. If you set your iPhone or iPod Touch down, Bloom will begin to improvise for you, creating limitless amounts of soft tranquil music.
Bloom has nine mood setting that allow you to change the tone of your compositions.
This app is for everyone. I found it great fun to play with and watch the colored dots expand like ripples. Even when I got bored of playing with the screen, I sat down and read for a while with the sounds that Bloom improvised and found it to be wonderful reading music.
You shouldn’t expect to be able to create symphonies, but it is well worth $3.99.
