Blends isn’t much to look at, but when you’re looking for the right word, sometimes less is more. The app’s simple interface, where users search for a word they’re looking for and then see a list of definitions along with various synonym, antonyms, hyponyms and hypernyms for the word, couldn’t be any simpler to use.
It’s that simplicity that works in Blends’ favor, as you can quickly find a word, get its definition and some alternatives if you’re tired of using that specific word, and get out in under a minute. If you want, you can also “bookmark” a word for quick use later, too. Essentially you can create a custom dictionary of words you frequently use. Otherwise, Blends is notable more for what it doesn’t feature.
There is no audio reading of the word’s pronunciation or definition. No image accompanies a definition, and in fact there aren’t any image to speak of. That shouldn’t really be an issue unless you’re more visually inclined, but with so many apps competing for publicity, sometime its omissions that are most notable from an app, especially one as laser-focused as Blends.
If you’re not concerned with superfluous extras and just want a good app to get some definitions, Blends could make for a very handy companion. Aside from price concerns and a limited feature set, it has plenty to say if you want to know what a word means.
