3D Pool Game HD is absolutely one of the most gorgeous billiard apps yet. Not only does it look great, but it also offers original pool gameplay that’s exclusive to this app. However, if you’re a hardcore pool fan, you’ll miss the classic games.
One of the most important aspects of any pool game is the control scheme. In this game, you control the viewing angle by simply sliding your finger across the screen. You can rotate around, and change the angle from far above the table to very close to the bumpers. After setting the angle of attack, you can select your power with a slider. Then, simply tap the button to take your shot. Some might miss the manual “pull the stick back” approach, but I think this control scheme works very well.
There are three main game types included in this app. You can play time trial, matrix mode or two-player 15-ball mode. In time trial, you have four minutes to pocket as many balls as possible. The more balls you pocket in a row, the higher your point multiplier rises, and the higher your overall score will be. Matrix mode is the most complicated of the game types. In this mode, your score is calculated by multiplying or dividing your score by the difference between the last two balls you pocketed. Yeah, I was confused too. It’s not a very exciting game mode. Your final option is to play a 15-ball game against a friend using the same iPad by passing it back and forth. Time trial and matrix modes are interesting, but not really what I’d call fun.
Notice anything missing? Where are the classic eight-ball and nine-ball billiard games? These are the games that make pool fun to play, and this app simply leaves them out. I think it’s a decision they’ll regret. I’m sure these games will be added in a future update, as including them would be the only way for the app to really succeed.
One other minor criticism of the app is the lack of music or ambient sounds. Aside from the balls hitting each other, there is absolutely no sound. It’s just too quiet. Other than that, 3D Pool Game HD is definitely a high-quality billiard app that has a ton of potential. Add eight-ball and nine-ball, and it will be a real winner.
