A short while ago I reviewed Bill James Daily Match-Ups and remarked how strange it was to use a baseball stats app with Bill James’ name on it that seemed to lack any sort of in-depth statistical analysis. Well, Bill James Baseball IQ is much more what I had in mind.
If you can put aside the potentially scary intimidating $14.99 price point, what you’ll find is one of the deepest stat apps you’ve ever seen. You can chart the three-year statistics for every team or player in Major League Baseball in an insane number of categories.
Without listing them all, there are charts that show hit location, hit zone, k zone, even how disciplined particular batters are. In short, the level of detail here is so far past averages or on-base percentages or number of strikeouts, it feels like you’ve gained access to secret scouting tools.
It’s one thing to tell your friends that you think a particular player is popping up on fastballs too much. It’s another to be able to find the exact data for something like that to either prove or disprove your barstool theory.
If you consider yourself a savvy baseball fan who embraces the notion of analytics alongside your double plays, Bill James Baseball IQ is a phenomenal app. It is information at your fingertips, with no apologies offered. It’s not for everyone, and that price will rightfully scare off a few people who might take the plunge otherwise, but this is a fantastic app.
