It is a tough time for Big Ten football. The Southeastern Conference and – to a lesser extent – the Big 12 Conference have dominated college football over the past couple of years. The release the Big Ten Highlights iPhone app doesn’t make the conference’s future any rosier.
The free Big Ten Highlights brings you exactly what you’d expect – weekly football highlights from each team in the conference. It’s fitting then that there is nothing particularly flashy about this app, a weakness that makes it undistinguished amongst the plethroa of college football iPhone apps available.
In addition to weekly game highlights, there are other videos including plays of the week from the Big Ten Network, individual player interviews and spring game highlights. There is a good selection of videos for each team, and they are all good quality.
Unfortunately, the speed in which the videos are uploaded is hit an miss. The plays of the week seem to be updated in a reasonable amount of time, but it takes entirely too long for the game highlights to be posted. Not being able to view highlights two days after a game is completed just doesn’t seem right to me.
Also, while the videos look great, the app itself does not. It is a very simple design with no color or flash. While I am not a huge fan of the SEC Sports app, it is nice that it has more types of content such as stats and news. Relatively simple improvements like that would make Big Ten Highlights a much better app.
Still, followers of any Big Ten school should look into this app. It is nice to have access to highlights, and there is good variety in the clips the app presents. I definitely wouldn’t mind some more goodies here, but it’s hard to complain too much about a free app.
