Bebot, the beat-making app hands you the control

The Bebot sound-making app is awesome. At first, I was completely skeptical, thinking it could hardly compare to its antiquated opponents like the Rubik’s Cube, Etch A Sketch, even Lite-Brite.  But Bebot proved to be the kind of game I could get into for hours at a time without getting bored.

The concept is easy to understand—choose a Preset and move your fingers around the screen to determine the sound. If you want effects, you can choose from Echo, Overdrive, and Chorus—all pretty self-explanatory. And if you want a synth sound rather than what the preset sounds have to offer (though don’t assume the preset sounds are ordinary; Theremin is included in the basic options), you can select Synth Controls for a whole new round of selections. Scale is also an option, and true to what it sounds like—it offers a variety of chords going up and down the scale.

The highlight, no doubt, is that you can make cool noises happen without really doing too much. You don’t have to have any musical knowledge or experience, and the options are so basic you can get the hang of it without driving yourself crazy. Though Bebot may seem to include a limited amount of options, it definitely does not feel that way. The possibilities are endless without having to be too complex or intimidating.
