Audi makes a compelling brand statement with its Truth in 24 app. However, it would be better reinforced if this app didn’t repeatedly crash when trying to enter game mode.
A bit of background: The app title refers to the storied 24 Hours of Le Mans auto race. Audi has partnered with NFL Films to promote its sponsorship of the race and associated documentary. Truth in 24 incorporates some of that footage.
Upon launching, you see a high-resolution video clip from the film, followed by a slideshow of still images from Truth in 24. From there the user has the option of starting a virtual reality 3D driving game in two modes: Endurance and Practice.
In Endurance mode, the user controls the race car by tilting the iPhone to the left or right and hitting the onscreen gas and brake pedals. The challenge is to complete the course in the time allotted while trying to avoid crashing into obstacles and other cars on the track. In Practice mode there are no other cars so you’re racing against yourself.
Like many of these 3D driving games, I found it difficult to control the vehicle. Worse, the app often quit unexpectedly when entering race mode.
The real payoff in my mind though, is the free download of the entire documentary film from iTunes. And, despite the game glitches, Audi did a good job of promoting their racing heritage image with Truth in 24.
