For art lovers, Francophiles, or appreciators of history and culture, Paris’s Louvre museum is a must-visit destination. But whether you’ve yet to visit the City of Lights, or you have and you miss staring at the adorned ceilings of the museum, you can visit the Louvre in the palm of your hand with the new app Musée du Louvre.
Musée du Louvre (free) is divided into five sections. Under “visitor information” users will find directions to the museum, hours of operation, ticket prices and contact information. In “the palace,” the app displays information about the Louvre building itself, including video tours of some of the most famous rooms. All of the videos in the app default to French, but tapping the keyboard icon gives the option of hearing the clip in English, German or Japanese. There is also a video tour of the museum to be found under “A tour of the Louvre.”
The “artworks” section is the app’s real raison d’etre. Here, you’ll find a selection of the Louvre’s greatest works, and for each, a zoom-able image of the piece, a brief history, technical specifications and the occasional video clip, depending on the work’s level of fame.
Musée du Louvre has great potential for expansion in the future. I hope that the app’s developers are able to include information on more works of art found within the halls of the Louvre, as well as developing longer video clips. I’d also love to see audio tours offered for purchase in app and a map directory of the museum’s different galleries.
Amusez-vous bien!
