Are You Watching This?! iPhone app ensures you won’t miss another no-hitter or buzzer beater

Having too many sporting events to watch on television has never been a problem for me, but on more than one occasion, I have found myself watching a fourth quarter blowout while another game was headed for overtime.

Are You Watching This?! is a sports Web site that alerts users when a game is getting particularly close or interesting. It’s an especially useful Web site when you’ve got more sports options on television that you know what to do with, and now it’s an especially useful iPhone app.

The Are You Watching This?! iPhone app (free) allows you to select your cable provider and then lists the televised sporting events available to you. It also lets you filter what sports you want on your list, including smaller leagues like the NBDL.

Each game has a number next to it, which denotes how much interest there is in the game. While a game between bad teams that isn’t competitive will have a small number, a close game between rivals will garner a much larger number.

Basically, Are You Watching This?! lets you know what you should be watching. With the iPhone app, you won’t miss things like no-hitters or overtime finishes, and that’s a very cool thing.

The iPhone app’s one glaring weakness is the lack of a push notification service. It’s already a stripped-down version of the Web service, so this is a feature that needs to be included. Given that you can sign up for email or text alerts through the Web site, you have to wonder what the point is.

Fortunately, the iPhone app’s developer has said they will add push notifications sometime in 2010. Once that is included, this will go from being a nice iPhone app to being an outstanding one.

It’s a free download, but anyone unfamiliar with the Web site should check that out first. It will change the way you watch sports on television – for the better.
