Aquatic Alphabet HD ($2.99) is an app that teaches children the alphabet while also educating them about marine life. Its simple interface and colorful graphics make it perfect for children of all ages.
The main screen displays each letter of the alphabet in alternating colors. Each letter represents a different type of fish. After touching a letter, the screen will display the fish’s name and an aquatic environment where you’d find it. The app includes ambient sound and several touchable objects. You can touch environmental things, like bubbles, to make them pop. You can tap on the fish to see a brief animation of a typical action. You can also tap on each letter of the fish’s name to hear it read aloud.
There’s also an “Information” button that provides some interesting facts about the fish being displayed. However, this feature might only be beneficial if there is someone there who can read it to the child. My guess is if the child is still learning the alphabet, he or she won’t be able to read each word on the screen.
This app will undoubtedly appeal to children of all ages. The colors are bright, and the animations are engaging. There are a ton of objects to touch and play with. There is, however, one feature I see lacking. It would be beneficial to have the fish’s name and facts read aloud via audio narration. Many apps aimed at children have this option, and it should be included here. Other than that, this is a solid application that’s absolutely fun to use.
