Action gamers, shutterbugs, fantasy musicians and next-generation filmmakers will all have new and/or just updated apps to enjoy on Apple’s new iPad.
While there are now more than 200,000 apps designed specifically for iPads, Apple chose to showcase a handful of new titles. Of course, this is just scratching the surface. When third-party developers get their hands on the new devices, there are no limits to what will be created on the new faster and sharper device. In the interim, let’s take a look at four new or transformed apps Apple showcased today on the new iPad.
Infinity Blade: Dungeons
Readers of Appolicious know about our affection for state-of-the-art action games Infinity Blade and Infinity Blade II. Developed by ChAIR and published by Epic Games (with its Unreal Engine 3 graphics software), the sword-to-sword action games set a new standard for graphics and gameplay on mobile devices. It’s no surprise, then, that Apple chose to showcase this new title as part of the new iPad announcement. Epic Games president Mike Capps, in fact, is a veteran of Apple iAnnouncements. Infinity Blade: Dungeons, the new dungeon crawler game that does not yet have a release date, will show off the new Retina Display, 3.1 million pixels and A5X processor. Can’t wait to play the new game on the new device.
iPhoto
If there were any features of the iPad 2 that were lacking, it was its pedestrian camera. Not the case with the camera in the new iPad, which sports a 5-megapixel sensor and stabilization technology to make taking pictures from a tablet more feasible. It’s basically an iPhone 4S camera in an iPad. New hardware from Apple of course comes equipped with new software, specifically the iPhoto app which will be available shortly. The universal app, which will be priced at $4.99, includes many of the same photo-editing tools and capabilities found in the desktop version of iPhoto 11. This includes tools to adjust for sharpness, saturation, and contrast. As the new iPad is as much about content creation as it is content consumption, the new Photo Journals feature of the app – which let users integrate maps and weather status – will be a joy to operate.
Another new game to watch out for that was displayed is Sky Gamblers, from developer Namco. Also, users will enjoy a new “smart strings” feature for GarageBand and a new tool for iMovie that lets users create their own movie trailers.
Another added bonus for app enthusiasts. Apple increased its over-the-air app download limit to from 50 MB (to 20MB). This means no need to find wifi or connect to a Mac to download data-intensive apps.
Pretty sweet!
